The ZIP code of an estate or moving sale tells you more about what you will find inside than the headline does. A 02138 sale (Cambridge, MA) and a 32801 sale (downtown Orlando) have almost nothing in common.
Higher-income ZIPs: better goods, smaller discounts
Sales in the wealthiest decile of ZIP codes — most of the Bay Area peninsula, Westchester County, the North Shore of Chicago, parts of Miami-Dade — surface higher-quality inventory. Mid-century furniture, signed art, designer fashion, fine china in complete sets. Pricing reflects awareness; do not expect to find a $4,000 Eames lounge chair priced under $1,500. Show up early on day one with cash, and accept that the discount on day three will still leave items above what they would cost at a sale in a smaller market.
Mid-tier suburban ZIPs: the volume play
Suburbs of midsize cities — most of the Sun Belt, the Midwest, the inland Pacific Northwest — are the volume sweet spot. Pricing is often closer to garage-sale rates, even at professionally run estate sales. Inventory tends toward the practical (kitchen, lawn, hand tools, outdoor furniture). The best buys are full sets at single-digit dollar prices: a complete Pyrex bowl set for $20, a working drill press for $40, a working push mower for $60.
Rural ZIPs: tools and time
Rural sales reward patience and a truck. Working farm equipment, hand tools accumulated across decades, vintage toys, and (occasionally) genuinely rare antiques surface at small-town sales priced as if the seller has not looked at the resale market in twenty years — because they have not. The trade-off is travel time and limited foot traffic. Plan a route of three or four ZIPs and consolidate the trip into a single day.
